Tangled user guide

  • background
The about page describes the background of the Tangled application.

  • overview
The Tangled description column of the home page is a general overview of the Tangled application.

  • use cases
Because paperback field guides are so popular, it is worth pointing out how the use of the Tangled application is different from the use of paperback field guides.  The Tangled scenarios column of the home page does just that.

  • installation instructions
There are several components of Tangled that should be downloaded and merged into a single /tangled directory on your SD card before you link them together with the Tangled application's class list's 'select/link' menu item.  The downloading and merging are described in the installation instructions.

  • user interface
There are two variations of the Tangled application's user interface: one for devices with touchscreens intended to be tapped by a stylus (e.g., PalmOS and WM devices), and the other for devices with touchscreens intended to be tapped by a finger (e.g., Android and iPhone devices).  Both are described here.

  • check projection logic
Check projection logic is the Tangled application's alternative to the single-access identification keys often found in paperback field guides.  While check projection logic may seem awkward, perhaps overly mathematical at first, it offers several important advantages over single-access identification keys.  In other words, if you want to get the most out of the Tangled application, read this.

  • more
The user guides to the Peck bird information manager and the Universal Field Guide were rather lengthy.  Because not many people like reading lengthy user guides and even fewer people like writing them, the approach to the Tangled user guide will follow the KISS and LOVE acronyms/principles: Keep It Simple Stupid and Leave Out Virtually Everything.  Instead of attempting to cover everything, this Tangled user guide will expand according to the interests of users.

So, if you have a Tangled question that is not yet covered in this minimal user guide, post it to the Tangled field guide users group hosted by Google.  If there is group interest in the question, it will get documented here as well as answered in the users' group.
